Create a shady piece of paradise in your own backyard. A deck canopy offers the ability to create a covered area outside of your home that offers comfort and protection from the elements. Installing a deck canopy is an affordable and relatively easy project that you can do to enhance the appearance and comfort of your deck or patio. In addition to doing it yourself, you can also choose to have a professionally created and installed deck canopy.

How is a Deck Canopy different than an Awning?

A roll up awning typically attaches to the side of your home and can be retracted easily as needed. Sometimes, however, the size of your deck is too large for an awning to provide appropriate cover and protection. Sometimes you may not want to install a structure directly on to your home. If either of these are the case, a deck canopy may be the solution you are looking for.

If the area that you are looking to shade isn’t located right next to a structure, a deck canopy may be an excellent solution. Sometimes you just need a little extra shade poolside. In this instance, you need something that is able to support itself without being attached to your home or other buildings outside. An awning is simply not practical in this type of area. Here is an excellent area for a canopy or gazebo type of shade installation.

Styles of Deck Canopies

When choosing a deck canopy you have the option of a custom installed canopy made just for your area.  This option is more costly than doing it yourself, but the canopy will be custom made for your home.  Professionally installed canopies have a luxurious look and feel - much like something out of a Cancun travel brochure.  The contractor will work with you to determine the colors and fabrics that are appropriate for your needs as well as do all of the heavy lifting for you.

Self-installed deck canopies are very popular as well.  Basically a deck canopy consists of some type of framing material and fabric that drapes over the top.  The frames are typically constructed of either rigid steal or heavy-gauge aluminum.  They can be powder coated to match a variety of home finishes and to compliment your fabric choice.  The canopy material is a weather proof material that will stand up to some beating.  The material is typically removed for storage during the fall and winter months, unlike with an awning system.

Mounting and track systems for a deck canopy typically come pre-cut and drilled.  All you will need to do is erect the frame system and then attach the fabric to the frame.  There are many different styles and colors of fabrics to choose from so that you are sure to be able to find something attractive for your home.

A deck canopy does offer some additional protection for your home from the elements during the seasons it is up.  You will have some protection from the wind and rain in addition to added shade and protection from sun damage.  Most deck canopies are well constructed and will provide years of protection when properly cared for.  If there is a problem with the fabric, it is usually fairly easy to find a replacement cover without needing to purchase the entire frame system again.  When you take the steps necessary to properly maintain your deck canopy, you will be rewarded for years with beautiful outdoor shaded living area.

That's a really cool idea! If it's too hot, you have shade... if it's raining, who cares! you can still BBQ.

That would really be a nice addition to a deck.
