Schwinn Elliptical Trainers

One of the most popular manufacturers of home elliptical cross trainers is Schwinn (Nautilus Inc.). Schwinn elliptical trainers generally fall into the mid-range of quality for home elliptical machines. There are currently three separate models of Schwinn Ellipticals and all are a vast improvement over previous models that were marketed. Depending on your situation, there is a Schwinn elliptical to fit your needs. The current models are the Schwinn 430, 431, and the 460.

If you are considering purchasing any elliptical exercise equipment for your home, the Schwinn elliptical models are not to be passed by in any review due to their surprising quality from such economical models. Why spend $2-3,000 when you may find exactly what you are looking for at one half to one third of the price?

Schwinn 430 Elliptical Cross Trainer

The Schwinn 430 is the current lowest end elliptical manufactured by Schwinn. The 430 is a front drive, variable speed elliptical cross trainer. It has a fixed stride length of 18" which is generally considered comfortable by most people although you may want to try one out before deciding for sure. The fixed strides on most gym elliptical models is 20" so although it may be comfortable, if you are used to the using an elliptical at the gym it may take some getting used to. The flywheel allows for both forward and reverse motion with 16 resistance levels from a quiet magnetic 25 pound flywheel.

The Schwinn 430 will support a user up to 275 pounds. If you are very close to this weight limit, you may want to consider the next model up as sometimes users at the weight max report the machine feels a little more unsteady as though it may move around. Higher end models are constructed from heavier materials and are thus able to support more weight.

The computer display is via an LCD - there is no back light for those that like exercising in a dark room. Heart rate is monitored through a plate on the handlebars. The computer system on the Schwinn 430 elliptical is the least sophisticated of the three Schwinn models available. It contains settings for 8 Workout Programs: 1 manual, 6 profile, and 1 calorie goal.

Pros - The Schwinn 430 elliptical is a wonderful, space saving machine with a good quality flywheel and an appropriate stride length for most people. It is best used moderately by one, maybe two, persons. It will fit even in a small apartment and has wheels to allow it to be rolled into a corner after use. Almost everyone who has purchased the 430 ranks it between a 4-5 on a scale of 5.

Cons - Some users have difficulty with the articulating foot rests and report that their heels continue to lift up. Normally your feet should remain flat at all times to provide the lowest impact cardiovascular workout possible. Lack of a back light on the monitor makes it difficult to read in low light situations. The model does have a cord attached which will need to be placed to avoid tripping.

Schwinn 431 Elliptical

The Schwinn 431 elliptical is an upgrade over the 430 with the same size footprint. The 431 includes a more robust computer system and a heavier frame design. The computer system allows for 1 manual, 10 profile, 2 heart rate control, 2 custom, time trial, calorie goal, fitness test, BMI test, recovery mode, results, mode programs as opposed to the 8 available on the 430.

The improved frame on the 431 adds some weight to the elliptical machine which increases stability and allows support for persons up to 300 pounds. This will make the machine slightly more difficult to move around, but its always suggested to assemble the machine near where you plan to use it. The 431 includes rubber pads on the pedals which eliminates customer complaints about lifting heels on the Schwinn 430 elliptical model

Additional features standard on the Schwinn 431 elliptical include a 3-speed fan and an MP3/iPod holder.

Average customer rating after purchasing the Schwinn 431 is 4.5/5.

Pros - Much the same as the 430 model, the Schwinn 431 elliptical is an excellent bargain in a space-saving elliptical machine. The 18" fixed stride length is comfortable for most people and the flywheel provides enough tension to create a challenging workout for most people. The upgraded computer system with back lighting provides more elliptical workout options as well as the ability to customize your workout. It is an excellent economical option for 1-2 moderate users. The Schwinn 431 also has a better warranty than the 430.

Cons - Slightly more expensive than the 430. Over-tightening the bolts during assembly can cause the machine to squeak. Some users over 6' tall report not feeling comfortable on the machine. If you are tall you may want to consider trying one out at a local fitness store before purchasing online.

Schwinn 460 Elliptical

Of the Schwinn elliptical trainers, the 460 is the only model available that integrates Schwinn's variable stride technology. By varying the amount of pressure applied by your feet, the machine will vary the stride length while you are using it. There is no need to manually adjust any settings or even to get off the elliptical trainer. Rather than being a front drive like the 430 and 431, the 460's drive sits mid-machine to power the V Stride technology.

The Schwinn 460 elliptical is taller than the other Schwinn models, has the heaviest frame, and the most advanced computer system. Heart rate monitoring is available through the handlebars as on the two other models as well as through a chest strap. This is nice if you like to move your arms to the stationary bars during your workout but still want to be able to monitor your heart rate.

The display on the Schwinn 460 elliptical is back-lit and has a touch screen for easier navigation. Programming modes include 1 manual, 11 profile, and 2 custom for two users.

Pros - With the articulating foot plates and variable stride technology, the Schwinn 460 elliptical is perfect for family members with very different body types. The 460 is the highest end Schwinn elliptical trainer available while still offering an excellent value for your money. Programming modes allow for 2 users which is very nice when used by different family members. Good warranty length and sturdy construction make for a long lasting elliptical cross trainer.

Cons - The Schwinn 460 sits higher than the other 2 Schwinn models so if you have very low ceilings in the basement or wherever you would like to place the 460 this may be a consideration. Again this Schwinn has a power cord - none of the newer models have battery packs like some of the older Schwinn ellipticals did. Some users were unclear about how the V Stride technology worked before purchasing the model and report that it took a little bit of time to get used to. The Amazon link provided contains a video from Nautilus Inc. demonstrating the V-Stride technology, but it is always best to try out ellipticals in your area before purchasing online.
